The
Great Turkey
Walk
What in the world is a turkey walk!? Well, in this
case, it’s the event that took place in 1860 when a fifteen-year-old boy decided
to walk 1,000 turkeys from eastern Missouri to
Denver, Colorado.
It’s even crazier than it sounds.
In The Great Turkey Walk, Simon Green (who has just
completed third grade---for the fourth time) sets out on an adventure with two
mules, a wagon full of corn, a driver who was formerly the town drunk, and
1,000 bronze turkeys. Along the way he picks up two more companions who travel
with him through the many adventures of the prairie. Through encounters with
Indians, enormous swarms of locusts, and lots more, Simon learns real life
skills that give him more that the book learning he never understood could.
This book had my siblings and me laughing and crying in the same chapter. That is always a sign to my mom that we are reading a good book. This was another one that Mom read to us as part of our history “adventure reading” as we called it. Recommended for ages 10-14, my siblings and I were 6, 8, and 10 when Mom read it to us. The Great Turkey Walk gives a great picture of life while traveling across the frontier. I would definitely recommend it.
God
Bless You!!
What great memories this book brings! Another sure fire way to know it was a good book, was that every time I got to the end of a chapter, the kids would all shout, "No! PLEASE, will you read just one more chapter?!?!"
