Little House: The Caroline Years

Here I go again. This is another series. :) I just love series; they occupy me for a longer space of time than a single book. (However, the really cliffhanger ones tend to keep me glued to my room for a few solid days of reading. My family doesn’t see much of me during that time. :)

Well, most of you have probably heard of and/or read the Little House on the Prairie books written by Laura Ingalls Wilder. The Caroline Years are a similar series
written by Maria D. Wilkes and Celia Wilkins about Laura’s mother Caroline’s childhood.

Before writing the Little House Books, Laura wrote to her aunt, Martha Quiner Carpenter, Caroline’s older sister, asking her to tell about life growing up in the Quiner household. It is these letters and stories that the Caroline Years are based on.

Just like the Little House on the Prairie books, the Caroline Years provide great pictures of life in the early 1800s. As I read these books, I laughed at the comical antics of Caroline’s older brothers, tapped my feet to the imaginary music of Charles Ingalls’s fiddle, and shared Caroline’s excitement as she started school (both as a student and as a teacher).

Unfortunately, none of the unabridged versions of the Caroline Years are in print anymore. I would suggest checking first at your local library for these books, as they tend to be rather expensive.

God Bless!
